God proceeded to tell Bhishma ‘’Long ago you had
incarnated as a very brave but cruel hunter.
This hunter along with his fearlessness alas had
one ruthless hobby.
He used to catch live snakes with his powerful
hands, throw them on thorny bushes or fences and enjoy watching them squirm
with pain till they died.
Because this is your last birth, this particular
macabre deed has to be worked out.
The soul wishes to suffer the same bodily pain that
the innocent snakes would have suffered then.
That is precisely the reason that it is lying on
this bed of arrows in this bodily form as Bhishma.
