Spiritualism

One who neither hates nor craves for all the main characteristics of the three mode of material nature and who looks at all living entities and matter with an equal eye, is said to have transcended the modes of material nature.

One can transcend the three modes by becoming god conscious and getting spiritual. In this stage one can enjoy the spiritual life even in this world besides being in this body. Devotional service in Krshna consciousness results in liberation from material entanglement.

Those who are in the mode of goodness go to higher planets after death. Those in the mode of passion come back to the material world. And those in the ignorant mode go to hellish worlds.

Similarly activities done in the mode of passion are aimed at material happiness that result ultimately in misery. The ignorant commit such acts that result in illusion, misery and beastly propensities. Remember in this world created by god every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Those who kill animals for food or whatever reason they feel fit, will be killed by the same animals in the next birth.

By acting in mode of goodness one becomes purified. Work done in the mode of passion results in distress and actions performed in the mode of ignorance result in foolishness. A person acting in the mode of goodness does pious activities that result in happiness and bliss.

Those who die in the modes of passion are elevated to those planets where inhabitants are engaged in fruitive activities.

Those who die in the mode of ignorance take birth in the animal kingdom. In each case the planets where the living entity is shifted, has only that particular mode that is Brahmaloka, gnanaloka etc. have only those inhabitants who were in the mode of goodness, planets inhabited by passionate living entities after death will have only those in the mode of passion and the animal kingdom will have only ignorant people.

Those who die in the mode of goodness are elevated to higher planets like Brahmaloka, Jnanaloka etc. where they enjoy bliss. These are planets where sages and devotees live.

When all gates of knowledge are opened, it means that the person is in the mode of goodness. When there is great attachment, uncontrollable desire, greed, and intense endeavor, the living entity is passionate. Madness, inertia, illusion & darkness personify an ignorant person.

There is no liberation in goodness, passion or ignorance. The mode of goodness conditions one to happiness, the mode of passion to fruits of action, and ignorance mode to madness. One of the modes becomes prominent for a temporary period in this material world. There is always a competition for supremacy among the three modes.

In the mode of ignorance the result is one is a victim of madness, indolence and sleep. Mode of ignorance is opposite to the mode of goodness. In the mode of ignorance one becomes spiritually lazy.

Those in the mode of passion have unlimited desires and longings. Because of these they constantly indulge in fruitive activities. Lust between man and woman is a fair example of passion. When the mode of passion becomes too powerful one hankers after material enjoyment. This gives birth to the desire for sense gratification for which one wants some honor in the society, family, wife, husband, children etc. To achieve all this one works very hard. These activities bind one. The present world is more or less in the mode of passion.

Spiritualism

Those in the mode of goodness become illuminated and are usually free from sinful reactions. They develop knowledge but are conditioned by the concept of happiness. Those in the mode of goodness are sometimes vain about their  intelligence and knowledge.

Scientists, engineers, doctors, writers, poets, philosophers etc. come in this category.

Material nature consists of three modes-Goodness, passion and ignorance. When the living entity comes in touch with the material world he/she comes in touch with these three modes.

The soul is transcendental and spiritual. Anyone who does not differentiate between the material bodies actually sees. The soul pervades the whole body but is never entangled to the actions of this body. The soul only provides consciousness to the body. The soul is different from the body.

We the souls are victimized by the material world just because we tried to lord it over the same and got entangled. The way of life that we follow in this material world is broadly divided into three modes of material nature ie. Goodness, passion and ignorance. That which is above them is renunciation, and that which is below them is beastly. Entangled in this material world we meet all sorts of good and evil among the various species.

The super soul is the master of the three modes of material nature viz. Goodness, passion and ignorance. The super soul exists both inside and outside the body of both the moving and the non moving. The super soul is beyond the senses. The super soul is light as well as knowledge. The super soul is also the goal and object of knowledge.

While the majority of living entities consider themselves as the gross body, they actually mean the whole package ie the causal body of intelligence, the subtle body of mind and senses and the gross body consisting of ether, air, fire, water and earth. Here they wrongly think that the matter inside the skull of a body, called brain is the all in all. Actually it is only an instrument like the rest of the gross body which is actually controlled by the subtle body and the causal body.

There are three types of ego, the false ego, the ego and the super ego. Ordinarily living entities identify with the body and consider oneself as the gross body. This is called false ego. Yet there are some elevated souls who consider that they are actually a soul which has taken birth in this body this time. This is what is called ego. Yet there are very rare and advanced beings who believe that they are as individual souls actually a part and parcel of the super soul. This is called super ego.

Humility, lack of pride, nonviolence, tolerance, simplicity, learning from a bona fide spiritual master, cleanliness, steadiness, self control, renunciation of objects of sense, absence of false ego, the perception of birth, disease, old age and death, nonattachment to family, even mindedness amid both pleasant and unpleasant circumstances, unalloyed and constant devotion for god, love for solitude, detachment from the masses, constant strive for self realization, and search for supreme truth are all knowledge. The rest is ignorance.

The collective fields and souls constitute the material world. The permutation and combination of individual souls interact with each other and try to control the inferior energy of god that is inert matter. This is the reason for all commotion and strife.

Our body is called a field and one who knows this body is called the knower of the field. The knower of the field is someone who understands that he/she is not the body but the soul within, which is trapped into a three layered cocoon of causal, astral and gross body. The super soul which is present in every entity as witness knows both the body and the soul within all the bodies.

One who is not the cause of any difficulty to others, and who is not disturbed by anxiety, and who is steady in happiness and distress is very dear to god. A true devotee of god shuns bad company. He/she is very patient, and talks on topics pertaining to god. His/her supreme goal is god.

One who is devoid of false ego, who is friendly to all, who does not think of himself as the proprietor, who engages in devotional service, is equal in both happiness and distress and whose mind and intelligence are in agreement with god, is very dear to god.

If even Karma Yoga is difficult then one can give up the results of one’s work and be self situated.

If even being self situated is not possible one should engage in cultivation of knowledge. However meditation is better than knowledge and better than meditation is renunciation of the fruits of action, by doing which one attains eternal peace.

One who feels it difficult to fix one’s mind in Bhakti yoga, Karma yoga ie devotional service to god is the answer. The devotee can live and work for god alone. This too is a path towards liberation.
