Monks, sages, Renunciant etc. are aloof not because
they are scared of the society. Actually they are scared of dropping their own
guard inadvertently. This again is because devotion and meditation result in
bestowing the devotee/sages with uncontrollable heat and energy which can be
harmful to the mortals.

Mahatma Gandhi had mastered this art of the mind by passing the senses to deal
with the gross body, in some cases.
So much so that once he had managed to numb
his pain sensation by going through an agonizing operation on his own arm,
without using anesthesia. Similarly he relished chewing balls of extremely
bitter neem.
This talent of his was probably the reason for his going through
those masochistic hunger strikes. Several sages down the ages who take up
several penances have also mastered this art.
Similarly athletes, sports men,
body builders, boxers, martial artists etc. have also knowingly or unknowingly
mastered this art of withstanding pain.

The astral and causal body are made up only of
ether. However all these are in the material plane. In the gross body the main
transformer is the brain.

other four tangible elements namely earth, water, fire and air but it is
actually controlled and regulated by ether through mind, senses and
intelligence.
