When there is a predominant rise in atheism and a studied callousness towards religious practices, the lord descends on this earth to protect and favor the godly, helpless and innocent devotees and annihilate the demons in human form. Those who know this transcendental appearance of god, are saved from repeated births and deaths and attain his eternal abode finally.

One who’s mind is steady and he/she devotes himself/herself in devotional work is superior to the idler who renounces every action but whose senses keep delving on material things . Action is better than inaction. One must never ever pretend to be what one is not. Activities done in god consciousness cleanse the heart. Food taken after it has been offered to god first releases the ultimate eater of sin.

For the introspective sage, the time of awakening into godliness is dawn whether it is in the day or night. Incessant flow of desires does not perturb such a person. A god conscious person’s material desires are satiated by god himself.

One who religiously follows the religious principles of freedom becomes free from attachments and aversions. When situated in such divine consciousness one’s intelligence becomes steady. Only when one is in divine consciousness does one get peace and bliss. When a person is not in god consciousness one is swept away by one’s senses.

While contemplating on the objects of senses a desire for them arises. This desire crystallizes into lust. When lust becomes too strong it gives birth to fear, doubt, jealousy and anger. These bad feelings result in greed, avarice and illusion. Finally these all join together and fill the entity who identifies with the gross body with false ego. This results in bewilderment and loss of intelligence.

Spiritualism

A sage of steady mind is not perturbed by the happiness and miseries of the material world. He withdraws his/her senses from sense objects and goes within. He/she does not allow them to run free. As the taste of god consciousness is far more superior the devotee finds it easier to eschew the inferior material and, carnal pleasures. 

One can control the senses by concentrating only on mind. As both form part of the subtle body, the devotee should henceforth feel only from the mind and not allow senses to rule the gross body.

Karna was a Kshatriya (passion mode) brought up by a Sudra(ignorance mode). If only Karna had been honest enough to identify himself as a Sudra, to hide his own Kshatriya birth lord Parasurama would have appreciated this.

Instead Karna claimed to be a Brahmin (goodness mode) of which he knew nothing, and was promptly caught in a lie

Spiritualism

1.  Lord Parasurama abstained from teaching martial arts to the Ksatriyas. Did that mean that he was ready to teach the Brahimns, Vaisyas and Sudras? If it was so it explains why he cursed Karna.

Lord Parasurama was a renunciant by then and so he could see through Karna’s blatant lie. If only Karna had said that he was a vaisya or sudra, lord Parasurama would not only have taught him but also considered him his favorite student. Lord Parasurama took offence to Karna calling himself a Brahmin. There is a valid reason behind this.

Here lies the zinger:

1.  Lord Parasurama vowed never to teach his form of martial arts to ksatriyas under the pretext that they will misuse it to torment innocent folks. If so then why did he teach Bhisma a kshatriya? Was it because he differentiated between good and bad kshatrias?

We all know that his maternal uncles and maternal grandfather killed his father & seven brothers and tied up the mother out of sheer ire at her marrying a brahmin.

The poor lady called for his help 21 times and hence lord Prasurama killed all kshatrias on earth 21 times.

The case of lord Parasurama is quite intriguing as well as interesting. Lord Parasurama who is considered to be an incarnation of god was born to a Brahmin father and a Kshatriya mother, as their eighth son. This makes him half from the mode of goodness and half from the mode of passion. However he ultimately became a renunciant who is  above the three modes of material nature.

Devotional service rids one of good as well as bad reactions of the work even in life. The wise take to such devotional service to escape repeated births and deaths. The ignorant people try to adjust themselves to the fruits of action and get entangled in material life. One who is a devotee of god and is fully surrendered to him has all the good qualities of sages. Those people are happy and blissful, having realized the self.

A Brahmin cannot be a soldier, A kshatriya should not be a business man, a vaisya should not be a sweeper, a sudra should not become a preacher and so on.

A person must conscientiously do what he/she is cut out for even if he/she may not be an expert in that job. At the same time he/she should not do whatever he/she is not supposed to do howsoever an expert he/she is in it. Dronacharya was a Brahmin expert in martial arts. He could have been a teacher of martial arts but not a soldier.

You have every right to perform your duty, but you have no right to predict what the results of such actions would be. Such action without attachment to results is called yoga. Hence you should neither be attracted to the fruits of action nor towards not doing your duty. One should surrender one self and one’s actions to god.

In other words you will not have to start again from basics in spiritualism after every birth. A person attached to the material world and its trappings of opulence, relations, family etc. cannot become godly. Remember that you have every right to possess these things and control them but you should never ever allow these things to control you.

Even a little advancement in the path of devotion to god is beneficial to the devotee. This progress is actually permanent and is carried forward from birth to birth. If in your present life you have gone to a level in devotion, in the next you will begin from where you left in this birth.

Remember that the soul passes to another birth, after death. If you have realized your true self you should never be bewildered by this fact. The soul can never be destroyed.

This shows that no one escapes the wheels of karma. Mahavtar Babaji constructed a palace in the Himalayas so that Lahiri Mahasaya could enjoy the luxury of living in it and work out that karma. Probably that was Lahiri Mahasaya’s last birth in this gross world.

God told Bhishma ‘Long ago in your hundred and first birth before this you were a very brave but alas a sadistic hunter. You had a very cruel hobby of catching hold of live snakes, throwing them on thorny fences and watching them squirm and die a painful death. As this is your last birth, you have been forced to work out that ancient karma and suffer exactly as those snakes did then.’

Anguished Bhishma cried to god and sought an explanation for his own sorry plight. God told him ‘O noble soul, it is a fact that you have not committed any mistake in the past hundred births. But it is also a fact that this is your last birth and that you will never come back to this gross body again. Hence it is imperative that you work out all your past karma in this world.’

Grandsire Bhishma was quite noble and god loving. But in the end of his long life he ended up on a painful bed of arrows. Not even his own mother or father or loved ones could help him.

The evil do not deserve any compassion. To be kind to them is a sign of weakness. We have to remember that each soul is in the path of endless births and deaths and each soul has its own destiny charted out for it according to its deeds. Hence we do not actually know what is in store for which soul and why.

A dacoit called Ratnakar became Maharishi Valmiki and wrote the Ramayana. A prince called Sidhartha ran away from the lap of luxury and became Lord Buddha. A terrorist wanted by the law escaped and became Sri Aurovindo Ghosh. Swami Vivekananda gave ample trouble to his mother in his childhood because of his unending mischief.

Good is only curious to know what the bad consists of and who are those who have turned against good. In fact many a time good is quite pained when it comes to note that several souls which good considered worthy of love and respect have ultimately proved to be not so noble.

This is the right time to realize that god has not given us the right to fully judge another soul. We are actually incapable of knowing who is worthy in the eyes of god and who is not.

It so happens that whereas the bad is always perturbed by and jealous of the prowess of the good yet the opposite is not true. That is the power of devotion and total surrender to god. Good is never afraid of bad. Bad is only of a nuisance value to good. Even when they hate to accept it bad and evil people involuntarily shudder at the sight of the good godly souls.

Karna is the missing child, and Arjuna is the other one. Lord Krshna is the mother who loves both. Neither the mother(Lord Krshna) nor the child (Karna) will heave a sigh of relief till they meet each other after several twists and turns. By now the kids have failed to recognize each other and have become enemies.

Anything can happen to this innocent lad. It now depends on the kid’s destiny as to what it could henceforth see, what sort of persons it could henceforth meet and how they will handle the kid.

The scared child begins to cry out of fear. The shocked mother does not know what to do. She now has to search for the lost kid while making sure that the other one is safe with her. She gets distraught.

Initially both kids obey their mother. They hold the hands and enjoy the trip to the market with their mother. Wide eyed and innocent they look at the colorful spectacles, shops, people etc.

Suddenly one kid spots some balloon hawker. Extremely enamored by this the kid leaves the mother’s hand and runs after the hawker who totally unaware of this commotion, vanishes into the crowd.

Now the kid is lost.

The relationship between Karna, Arjuna and lord Krshna reminds one of a 

strange story. A loving mother has two small children. She is equally fond of both.

One day she takes the kids to the market. 

Out of love for her tots she tells them to hold each of her hand lest they get lost.

The fourth Nakula was known for his beauty, energy and speed. He was such good a horseman that, he could ride amidst torrential rains, without getting wet.

Sahadeva the youngest was the most intelligent and knowledgeable among the Pandavas. 

He was a brilliant astrologer and veterinary surgeon.

Both Nakula and Sahadeva were expert swordsmen.

Spiritualism

Both Arjuna and Karna were master marksmen with a bow 

and arrow. Whereas Arjuna was the favorite student of 

Dronacharya, Karna had lord Parasurama as his teacher. 

Thus he, Bhishma and Dronacharya were almost brothers.

Arjuna is the Soul and lord Krshna is the Super Soul in all of 

us .

Spiritualism

The third son was Arjuna. He and Karna were sworn enemies. While Karna knew his own identity as the eldest among Kunti’s sons, the rest including Arjuna were totally unaware of this.

In fact Karna promised to Kunti that she was and will ever be a mother of five sons. While the four would be Yudhishtir, Bhima, Nakula and Sahadeva the fifth could be either himself or Arjuna depending on who killed whom during the battle.

The second was the huge Bhima with legendary physical prowess. Actually his was not muscular but spiritual strength which had resulted in his getting so gigantic in size.

Bhima the hero of all mainly children was totally guileless. He was an expert in wielding the mace. Both Bhima and Duryodhana learnt the art of fighting with the mace from lord Balarama the elder brother of lord Krshna. Actually Duryodhana was lord Balarama’s favorite student.

Yudhishtar the eldest among them had a complexion like molten gold. He was an ace in wielding the spear. He lived for righteousness and was always truthful. A man of character he lived in hell for a day as repentance for the only lie he spoke.

His weakness was that he could never ever refuse an invitation for gambling.

Just like the Kurus and their supporters the Pandavas too had their set of 

qualities. These were mostly divine. However to be fair to both sides, god was 

compassionate to both. To one he gave his own army and to the other himself.

The reader can now imagine how difficult this could be. In 

other words behind three births as a demon slain by god 

one has to go through endless births as an evil person.

The lord did not kill the Kurus, Karna, Shakuni, Dhritashtra, 

Bhishma, Dronacharya etc. himself because they  in spite of

their talent were not yet so qualified as evil. That is the 

reason that they were killed by the Pandavas and not by 

Lord Krshna.

After every birth as a demon killed by god, one has to again take several births as an evil person before being slain by god the second time. And the soul reaches the ultimate abode of god after being killed thrice.

To become a demon powerful enough to be killed by god even once, one has to take several births as evil person. Hiranyaksha, Hiranyakasyapa, Ravana, Kumbhakarna, Kamsa, Shishupala, Dantavakra etc. are such demons who were slain by god.

God will not deliberately kill anyone human, demigod or demon unless that 

person is qualified and powerful enough to be killed by god.

A person who takes seven births as a demigod has as a devotee of god, already surrendered himself to the almighty. Hence whether he/she has to take seven or seventy births as a demigod it does not affect him/her.

But to become a full fledged demon, more so as one who has to be killed by god is not easy.

It is said in the scriptures that a person can reach god through the following two paths- a. by taking seven births as a demigod or b. by taking three births as a demon and getting killed in every birth by god.

On deep contemplation within one can understand this seemingly complex statement well.

Karna’s life reminds one of the lamentations of Cardinal Wolsey who was ultimately disgraced by the king of England Henri the VIII-

‘’ Had I served my own lord with half the devotion that I served this king with I would not have come to such a sorry pass.’’

Karna, Bhishma and Dronacharya were actually students of another incarnation of god Lord Parasurama.

However as the saying goes ‘You are judged by the company you keep’, Karna lost his war and life because he supported the wrong man- Duryodhana.

Duryodhana’s friend Karna was incredibly gifted and brave. Despite knowing 

that he was the eldest among the noble Pandavas, he remained loyal to 

Duryodhana till the end. Even lord Krshna was proud of him.

HARE KRISHNA HARE RAMA

Duryodhana’s younger brother Dushasana was loyal to the elder brother but 

equally evil. Though brave and hefty he was a confirmed drunkard who had 

his first drink immediately after breakfast.

Shakuni’s sister Gandhari the mother of Duryodhana and wife of Dhritarashtra 

was pious but deliberately blind who chose to obey the ignorant Dhritarashtra 

instead of Lord Krishna the supreme personality of godhead.

Duryodhana’s uncle was the extraordinarily cunning and crafty Shakuni who 

under the pretext of helping the nephew was all the time plotting to overthrow 

his own brother-in-law Dhritarashtra.

Dronacharya’s own son Ashwathama was like a blind man led down the 

path by another blind man- Dronacharya who himself was puffed up with false 

ego. Compared to the noble Dronacharya and the brave Ashwathama, another 

poor but god loving Brahmin Sudama was far better.

Despite his intelligence and infinite capabilities Dronachara was not only a 

master of material knowledge of martial arts but not withstanding his birth as a 

brahmin- the first among equals in the society, craved for material wealth and 

kingdom. This spelt his ultimate doom.

The most revered and elderly Pitamah(grand sire) Bhishma was under an 

illusion where despite his noble bearing, incredible power and love for god, he 

preferred to be attached to the material world (Hastinapur).

Dhrishtarashtra the father of Duryodhana and the emperor of the Kurus was 

spiritually ignorant that is blind by birth. At the same time like all demoniac 

people he was extremely scared of the divine Pandavas and god himself. In his 

heart of hearts he suspected that despite small in number the Pandavas were 

capable of defeating his own sons and their army the Kauravas.

Spiritualism

Being demoniac and spiritually ignorant by nature Duryodhana asked for the 

complete Narayani sena(the army of god). Its only the pious Arjuna who begged 

god himself as company during the war.

Here it is shown that despite his preference for the noble Pandavas, god does not 

discriminate between good and bad. In fact he asks Duryodhana the king among 

Kauravas to ask for what he wanted first.

HARE KRSHNA HARE RAMA

The pious, divine qualities of love for god, honor, truthfulness, spiritual strength, 

focus, piety, beauty, energy, speed, knowledge etc. are with the Pandavas. It is 

shown that despite small in number they are actually supported by god (Lord 

Krshna).

The very first verse says ‘What happened to the war between the sons of Dhritarashtra (Kurus) and those of Pandu(Pandavas)?’

Kurus represent the bad qualities which are unholy and demoniac. Jealousy, anger, vindictiveness, selfishness, cunning etc are demoniac qualities represented by Kurus.

We all are born with a set of good and bad qualities. Kurukshetra the battle field 

is our own Causal/subtle/gross body. It is called Dharmakshetra(holy field) 

because god/super soul is present inside as the Paramatma (the resident form of 

god) form.

In the Srimad Bhagawad Gita the description of the war is nothing but our 

own continuous inner tussle between the good and the bad qualities.

You cannot become Brahman (the ultimate universal 

truth.) You are Brahman. It is your forgetfulness of 

this fact that is the cause for your bondage. The 

causal/subtle/gross body comes and goes. It is the self 

that remains. The universe is born out of our 

ignorance.

The tranquility born out of the awareness that there is nothing but the self is exhilarating. For such a self realized soul the weariness of physical actions, the fatigue of the tongue and the distress of the mind do not exist. A self realized soul is awake even when sleeping and asleep even when awake. He/ She renounces all good and evil. A self realized soul can be understood only by another one like him/her.

When a person wants to abide in self he/she becomes intolerant of physical 

action, then feelings and then even thoughts. He/she is focused on self alone. 

He/she does not differentiate between acceptable/unacceptable, joy/sorrow, and 

just abides in self. The self realized soul is contented in his/her self alone. Blessed 

is such a soul which has realized its divine nature.

Spiritualism

One whose desires have melted away has no cause for anxiety which is the main 

cause for all tribulations in the universe. When one identifies with his/her causal 

body and intelligence instead of his/her gross body he/she is indeed wise. To be 

blissful one should be absolutely desire less and soul searching.

The subtle body (consisting of mind and senses) which controls and regulates the gross material body, cannot act on itself without the proper guidance from the causal body made of intelligence.

The intelligence of each individual is different. This intelligence with its ideas, guides the subtle body which consists of feelings. This subtle body in turn controls the gross body made of ether, air, fire, water and earth.

One should cultivate detachment towards life, wealth, the material world and its 

sense objects etc. By such detachment for material things the mind will develop 

an attachment to the study of scriptures and meditation. For such a person 

passion is an enemy.

Indifference to all the enchanting objects of this material world must be 

cultivated. Those in whom the desire and love for life and an attraction for 

material things is extinguished are rare and wise. Such a person realizes the true 

and absolute consciousness.

Bondage arises when the mind desires/accepts/ grieves for anything. Desire for 

something arises from ignorance. Total detachment for everything material 

results in liberation. The subtle body consists of mind as well as senses. To be 

liberated one should be active up to the mind alone. Senses must be controlled by 

the mind.

Remember that the self has limitless energy and mass. The self is in all beings 

and all beings are in the self. Our own world is created by our own mind. It is as 

per our ideas, choices, experiences, tastes, preferences etc. One guy wants to be an

engineer, the other a doctor, yet another a lawyer etc. The world for each 

individual is created accordingly. The universe is comprised of a collection of all 

such thoughts. A self realized soul is not perturbed by this universe. He/ She is 

tranquil.

In the first stage the gross body made up of ether, air, fire, water and air is dissolved.

In the second stage the subtle body of mind and senses is dissolved by dissolving all vasanas (desires).

In the third stage the causal body made up of intelligence is dissolved by letting go of all ideas.

Then the true realization of the self takes place.

The sage is not elated by his/her status of self realization. Virtue and vice do not touch the inner core of his/her heart. He/she acts spontaneously. Such people are rare indeed.

One should slowly get into the state of dissolution of the gross, subtle and causal bodies. This state is called ‘LAYA’. One should realize one’s true identity as the non dual self from which the universe rises like a wave in the ocean.

The wise devotee sees only the supreme self everywhere. Neither praise nor torment him/her. Such a person has lost any zest for life and the fear of death does not haunt him/her. He/she is free from desires and contented with self knowledge.

We all are an essential part of this universe. We have not come into the universe but have actually come out of this universe. The society and the world are but extensions of your body. One who is self realized uses the body only to play the sport of life.

A monk who has realized the self finds himself alone in this 

crowd of humanity. One’s bondage arises from one’s desire 

to live. The phenomenal world around us is a mighty 

illusion. This illusion is the main cause for attraction to 

worldly objects. A great person acts as if his body is 

different from him/her and that it is only the subtle body, 

guided by the causal body that makes the body move. 

He/she is just a witness of all that his/her body is doing.

One should meditate upon that single non dual consciousness. It is dense, of profound intelligence, 

serene, unperturbed and changeless. It is formless and takes any shape like water. The self exists 

inside and outside the body. The universe appears due to the ignorance of the self and disappears due 

to the knowledge of the self just like a rope appears to be a snake till the truth of its true identity is 

declared. The self remains intact even after the dissolution of the universe.

Virtue/vice/happiness/sorrow all are attributes of the mind not the self. One is 

neither the doer nor the enjoyer. One is ever free. One should remember that one 

is pure consciousness and be happy. If you think you are free you will become 

free. If you think you are bound you will become bound. You become what you 

think.

cooked up in your mind, are transferred to your senses and finally exhibited 

through your gross body. These seven along with manas(mind), budhi(intellect) 

and chitta(will) were the ten heads of Ravana.

Remember you can possess wealth but wealth should never possess you. This is 

called detachment and renunciation. Similarly your gross body should obey your 

subtle body which should in turn obey the causal body which must obey the soul 

which should necessarily be dovetailed to the super soul ie. God. A person who 

has achieved this becomes liberated and blissful.

Remember the moment you detach yourself from this body and abide in your consciousness you will at once become blissful, peaceful happy and free from bondage. 

Meditation is one method of detaching oneself from the body. This is called Jiwan mukti (Detaching oneself from the body even during the life.)

If you aspire for liberation eschew objects of senses as poison and crave for truth, 

forgiveness, straight forwardness, kindness and cheerfulness as nectar. You are 

self, mere witness to the happenings in the universe as pure consciousness. The 

gross body is merely a tool for the subtle and causal bodies to express themselves. 

An idea that germinates in the intellect, starts a thought process in the mind 

which result in the senses becoming active. These three causal and subtle bodies 

use the gross body made of ether/air/fire/water/earth to give ultimate vent to 

their ideas and feelings.

Spiritualism

When the supreme self gets identified with the body it becomes the limited ego. 

The body consists of the gross body made up of ether, air, fire, water and earth, 

the subtle body consisting of the senses and the mind and the causal body is made 

up of intelligence. When the ego begins thinking that it is this body, it becomes 

entangled in unlimited births and deaths. This illusion ends with the knowledge 

of the truth and subsequent emergence of true Brahman which is infinite.

Spiritualism

Remember that just like those who wear shoes to protect their feet are not hurt 

by thorns lying on the road,  similarly those who are learned and are contented 

under all conditions are never hurt by the thorns lying on the path of life.

Spiritualism

True monks and sages have a childlike innocence and lack of guile. Remember 

that god does not pardon those who knowingly harm children, god’s sincere 

devotees, genuinely guileless and innocent people and monks. Even if these 

people personally pardon their tormentor, the guilty are sooner or later victims 

of nemesis.
