Aware of his self worth he as a young lad went to Acharya Drona to learn martial skills. 

However the haughty teacher baulked imperiously slighting Karna by saying that he taught only princes.

Only later at Duryodhana’s behest Acharya Drona accepted Karna as a pupil albeit reluctantly.
